Underplay (verb)
- Industry term — a big act booking a small room.
- What every other platform does to most of the artists, venues, and writers making the music people actually love.
- The bands, rooms, and writers most worth your attention finding each other.
What this is
The Underplay is a music wire — a marketplace, a paper, and a drops feed in one place. Made for anyone playing, posting, writing, or paying attention. Bedroom artist in Halifax, dive bar in Saskatoon, writer in Calgary, headliner in Kelowna — it's all in scope.
The marketplace is where bands and venues post shows. Anyone, anywhere can submit. An editor reviews before it goes live.
The paper is where anyone signed in can pitch a review, a scene profile, a tour diary, a zine piece. We edit lightly and publish under your byline. The internet is full of writing about Coachella; almost none of it is about whoever's playing The Royal in Nelson on Thursday.
Drops are for the artists whose venue is the internet. A song on Bandcamp, a TikTok one-take, a YouTube video, a SoundCloud upload. The most underplayed scene of all is the one where nobody gets booked because they don't gig. We want them here too.
Where we started
The Underplay was built in Kelowna, BC, by a Canadian who watched too many good rooms go uncovered while every existing platform pointed at the same five arenas. The first venues we scraped were interior BC: Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Kamloops, Nelson, Revelstoke, Salmon Arm. That's the origin. That's not the ceiling.
Why we made it
Bandsintown is global, US-leaning, and built around artist marketing — not local discovery. Ticketmaster covers the arenas. Songkick and Eventbrite have moved enterprise-only. Instagram is where every venue actually posts — and is a terrible place to find out what's on next Friday.
So the rooms that matter — the indie clubs, the brewery taprooms, the bedroom artists releasing one good song a year — mostly go uncovered. We built a tool to scrape them directly. The data grows itself: every submission adds a venue or artist we follow forever. The bigger players ignore most of the music; we made the thing that doesn't.
What we want from you
If you play, post your show. If you run a venue, post the shows you're hosting. If you write, pitch a piece. If you dropped something this week, link it. If you saw a poster at a coffee shop and we don't have it, pass it along.
You play. We post.
