There's a particular kind of room that doesn't make it into the algorithm. A hundred and twenty cap. A back-bar PA. A booking calendar handwritten on a corkboard. Tuesday open mic, Friday a band you've heard of, Saturday a band you haven't but should have.
These rooms are where careers actually start. Not in the 2,000-cap club that books a touring act six weeks out — in the 80-cap pub that books the same five local bands on rotation and lets a sixth try out when they ask nicely.
The big listing services have made a deliberate choice not to cover these rooms. The economics don't work for them: too many small venues, too little ticket revenue per show, too much human judgement required to keep the data clean. So they don't. Which means if you're touring a 200-cap circuit through a region the big sites have written off, your audience can't find you, and the venue can't show you who else has played there.
The Underplay covers them on purpose. We're not trying to list every room — we're trying to list the rooms that matter, and let the count grow when it earns it. Right now that's an interior BC core plus the first venues we hand-picked from Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Halifax. Tomorrow it'll be wherever the next submission comes from. Anyone, anywhere, can add a venue.
A small verified list is a feature, not a gap. It tells a touring band: every room here is real. It tells a venue: you're on a list with peers, not buried in a feed of bowling alleys. And it gives us, the editor, leverage to say no to the rooms that don't belong yet.
The wire is the engine. Approve a venue and the scraper pulls their upcoming shows nightly, no API key required, no business development call required. The room shows up on the wire, the audience finds it, and the next band that plays there does too.
The big sites built infrastructure for the rooms that already had infrastructure. We're building infrastructure for everyone else.
